More about this scene
Warrington owes its regional and national importance to its role as a crossing point over the River Mersey. There has been a bridge at Warrington since the 13th century, when the town centre began to develop in its present location away from the medieval village off Church Street. This panoramic view shows the elegant single-spanned reinforced concrete bridge constructed between 1911 and 1915. Designed by the Warrington-born engineer John James Webster, the eighty-foot wide bridge was hailed as the most handsome in Britain. King George V opened the first half on 7 July 1913 by remote control from Warrington Town Hall!
