More about this scene
The flour and malting mills on the far bank dominate this peaceful riverside scene. From here, the grain barges would travel to London and return with cargoes of coal, helping to make Ware prosperous from the 18th century onwards. Between the mills are a number of ramshackle gazebos belonging to the High Street gardens, projecting out over the calm water and reflected in it.
