More about this scene
The most unusual feature of St Matthew's is an arched passageway underneath the chancel. This is a mystery for which there are various speculative explanations, some of them mundane, some more fanciful. Alfred Watkins, the man who came up with the idea of ley lines, claimed that churches were sometimes built deliberately on ancient tracks, with tunnels provided for travellers to pass through.
