More about this scene

Wadhurst is high up in the forest ridge and was noted for its market and iron industry. The church of St Peter and St Paul has many cast iron graveslabs in the floor. They are mainly of the Barham family who were ironmasters and landowners in the era of the Sussex iron industry 1617-1799 - the last iron-smelting furnace closed in 1808. In the picture, the spire of the church is visible above the trees on the hilltop.
