On the edge of Romney Marsh, this village, with its broad street, was once a flourishing seaport and shipbuilding centre; it was captured by the Danes with a fleet of 250 ships in the 9th century.
There was also a proposal to build a docks development on the marshes to the east of Keyhaven.
The church of St Mary the Virgin, standing on its mound on the edge of Romney Marsh and viewed here from the south-west, dates from the 13th and 15th centuries.
A great medieval port and a walled town, it declined as the sea retreated; by Victorian times it was mainly a prosperous market town for the surrounding area and the Walland Marshes.
In 1940 both river and marshes froze, so it was possible to walk the whole way to Acle.
