The school is a beautiful knapped flint and brick structure, and so is its surrounding wall; it was built in 1876. There have been important grammar schools in Thetford right back to 1566, when the Free Grammar School and hospital were founded by Sir Richard Fulmerton. One of its most famous pupils was the radical writer and activist Tom Paine, author of 'The Rights of Man' (1790-92). There is a statue of him in the town.
