More about this scene
The presence of so many merchants in Taunton probably explains the independent line taken by local folk in political matters - not always in their best interests. In 1497 the impostor Perkin Warbeck was proclaimed king in the town. During the Civil War the Borough supported Parliament. In 1685 Monmouth was declared king in its High Street. Taunton suffered much retribution for such rebellious activities.
