Stubbington House School

A Memory of Stubbington.

I still have a fairly clear (?) recollection of my time at Stubbington.
Includes -
- The Spithead Review (for the Coronation) on board a paddle steamer and passing dancing Russians on board one of the Soviet Union's finest.
- Coronation Day in the San with measles. Everone had a day at home.
- swimming at Hillhead having been transported by HMRF's saloon car. Not sure whether swimming there was a good idea.
- a Section football match (think I must have been off games and watching?) in which the goalie, feeling he had nothing to do as the ball was continuously at the other end, decided to untangle the back of the net at his end and got caught up in it himself. Whereupon a hefty boot from the other end sent the ball straight towards his goal. Despite frantic efforts goalie remainded caught and could only watch as the ball trickled slowly over the goal line behind him.
- being hit by Mr Maxwell's walking stick in English class. It was aimed at the chap behind me. I received an apology.
- A November 5th fireworks in which a rack of lit rockets fell on its side thus giving the school its first experience of being under fire. I think a fire extinguisher was used before anything dreadful happened.
- exploding inkwells.
- Fleet Air Arm Gannets, etc., training at landing and take-offs thus flying low over the school. Masters frantically scribbling aircraft codes for complaints to Lee-on-Solent officer commanding.

Personal photos available via e-mail but they are probably ones that everyone took of the school.

Comments & Feedback

I clearly remember all the things mentioned by David Matthews. I also was in Huddart 1952-1956. My father, grandfather & great uncle were past pupils. Mr Cheshire with glass eye, Mr Williams (French teacher) & of course the famous Mr Sara. My son Stephen Phillips followed when the school had moved to Ascot. Is there anybody out there of my vintage?
