The Clarks were philanthropic Quakers, and William provided this splendid institute, The Crispin Hall, named after St Crispin, the patron saint of shoemakers, further south-west along the High Street. Built in craggy rubblestone in a Tudor-ish style, it was opened by John Bright, the great Quaker free-trader, fighter for universal suffrage and radical thinker, in October 1865. It is still Street's community centre, a cafe‚ and a craft shop.
