More about this scene
This view gives a clear example of the impact commercial motor traffic had on the Great North Road, prior to the building of the M1 motorway. Along with the substantial numbers of parked cars along the verges, a laden lorry and a coach are advancing down the High Street, representative of the immense numbers of similar heavy vehicles which thundered through this part of the old town by day and night. On the left, another lorry awaits an opportunity to join the stream of traffic.
