Kite Flying

A Memory of Stephen's Castle Down.

I have very happy memories of Stephen Castle Down. It must be about 70 years ago, my mother, father, sister, brother and I used to go sometimes on a Sunday afternoon, to Stephen Castle Down to fly kites. I also remember we used to look for "shiver grass"? and pick some to take home. We lived in Cheriton, and I remember we used to try to get home in time fo church! Sadly, my mother died when I was 14 years old, and because Stephen Castle Down held such happy memories, my mother's ashes were scattered there in 1952/3.

Hi, I am researching King Stephen's Down history, and I wonder if you remember an Inn or Pub called the Fox & Hounds close to the down. Was certainly there around 1905 - 1910, the only reference I have is it was near 'Mill Barrows' ?
Hi Adiuk. I'm sorry I don't know anything about an inn near the Down. I was only a child at that time. I remember Mill Barrows being pronounced "Millburries" and I think it was on our way from Cheriton to Stephen's Castle Down. I will ask my sister, who is 7 yrs older, if she remembers the Fox and Hounds.
