Stanmore, a once picturesque village, has now lost much of its character, apart from one or two buildings; these include a superb but well-disguised hall house of around 1500 in Church Road. In the church of St John the Evangelist, W S Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame, sleeps under the widespread wings of a white angel; Gilbert lived at Grimsdyke, a house designed by the architect Norman Shaw, to the north.

Stanmore 1950 52
Hallo , my name is Cliff Bowley. My family moved to Stanmore in 1950 to a very large house called "Belmont Lodge " on the corner of Denis Lane and London Road junction. Does anybody remember it? It was knocked down for development, (what a shame). It was not very visible to the road because it had very large trees and bushes surrounding it. Regent House
During family research, I discovered that my grandmother, a Miss Bull was living in Regent House. She may have been in service, can anyone help with the family name or any other details of her employer?

Old Church
In the fifties, my mother worked at the Stanmore Cottage Hospital. As I cycled down Uxbridge Road to visit her at work, I imagined the ivy-covered old church to be a Norman Keep. Does anybody know why the old church was allowed to fall into disrepair and the new one built next door?

Susan Johns Remembers Stanmore
This is Buckingham Cottage, it was the hunting lodge of the Duke of Chandos.  When I was a child, two old ladies lived there and there were always butterflies in the garden which us kids used to catch. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
