Townsend Road

A Memory of Southall.

I lived with my Mum , her name was Olive Hughes in Townsend Road from about 1961 to 1970. We lived at number 148. My Mother drove a Torquoise blue Austin A 40, she was probably the only woman who drove and actually had a car way back then. My Mother was an extremely glamorous woman, always beautifully dressed. I attended St Anselm's primary school then after a brief stint at boarding school in Horsham I attended St Anne's Convent in Ealing. There were some wonderful Indian families living close by who used to invite my Mother to their family weddings, I remember she always bought beautiful red saris for the occasion. I have happy memories of playing hopscotch outside on the pavement, riding my scooter up and down, going out very late at night to buy bread from the bakery at the top of the road.My lovely Mum died in 1988 suffering from Cancer and the house was sold.Bitter sweet memories.

My name is Renu Terparia. I loved living in Southall from 1967. I loved living on Townsend Road, I went to George Tomlinson Primary school. It was a healthy mixed community. I'm not sure why i was sent to George Tomlinson School. Some asians were taken by coach every morning and dropped us back on Woodlands Road. Some friends I remember from those days were Lakhbir, Nirmal & Mohinder (twins), Balbir, Andrew Sangster ( sat with him at school). My Mum and Dad still live there. i don't visit often as I should as Its difficult to park now. Reply if you knew me.
