Slough Great Place To Live In The 50/60s
A Memory of Slough.
It was 1953 when my family moved into our council house in Chester Road Slough. I thought how good it was because we had lived in a very small caravan for 4 years and because the number on the door was the same as my age - 7.
There were some bad memories, my baby brother died just before we moved in and my eldest sister died 3 years later, I can remember playing cricket in the road in summer and football in autumn/winter. My other sister used to take me to The Ambassador Farnham Road for Saturday morning 'Matinee'.
I went to Godolphin School before William Penn Boys School. That is where I met my friends David Coleman who lived above a cycle shop in Farnham Road and Billy Lynch who lived in Court Crescent, around the corner from me.
Billy was my pillion rider when I bought my first motor bike, a BSA Bantam 175 and later a BSA 650 and Triumph Bonneville 650. He introduced me to some friends who had bikes and I became part of a gang of lads who frequented places like The Slough Snooker Spot and Tastee Freez - both in Farnham Road, We became regulars at Bartons Cafe Cippenham and The Cellar Cafe Windsor.
One of my best memories as a kid and teenager was Roses Fair coming to Granville playing field.
As an apprentice I had to pay visits to Tunes Engineering Stores; almost next door was the place where 'Super-Car' and 'Thunder-Birds' was made.

I am glad you remember the Farnham Road Swimming Pool. When me and my friend were 14 years, I could swim but Billy not. I helped him learn and one day he managed to swim a width - in the 3ft deep end. He became so confident that he straight away tried to do a width of the 6ft deep; he got half way and went under. I swam over to him and he almost climbed onto my shoulders. Fortunately a young man dived in and pulled him off and took him to the side.
Did you stay living in Slough for long? I left in !976 but moved back between 1984 and !988 - now living in Herefordshire.
