High Street
A Memory of Skelton.
Just to the right of the photograph, partially obscured by the tree is 27 High Street, where my family lived and, after the second world war, I lived with my Grand Mother, Mary Dixon, until 1953. The house to the left was occupied by Miss Wilkinson and to the left again by the 'Barnes' family. The old Mr. Barnes being the school teacher at the infants school situated to the right of the Chapel. (The white building shown on the top left hand corner of the photograph). I seem to remember that my Grand Mother played the Organ in the Chapel. The Garage by the arch sold motor fuel and the workshops were behind the building. I note from a visit a few wears ago, that the petrol station is now situated across the road, located in what we used to call Lightwings Field. As the photograph shows, this field was good and steep, the best for a sledge during the winter snows. To the rear of these houses was an uninterrupted view across Saltburn woods, looking over the Viaduct and past Saltburn Church, to the sea. I seem to be starting a short story here - I found this site recently and seemed compelled to add a comment from my boyhood memories, of which there are many more. I would be pleased to hear from any 'Old Skeltoners'
