More about this scene
The church stands on the site of an important regional Roman town known as Calleva Atrebatum. Little is known about the early history of the town, though the amphitheatre and public baths probably date from around AD 70 or 80. The church stands within the sacred pagan enclosure of the old town, and was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The chancel, with its priest's doorway and wall paintings, is early 13th-century and the fine chancel screen dates from around 1500.
