Heath Stores

A Memory of Sidcup.

My parents opened a grocery store at the bottom of Hatherley Road in 1960. It had been a corn chandlers before run by the Jennings family. Dad redesigned the shop on "modern " lines as a mini supermarket. I have many happy memories of our time living above the shop. My brother and I would often take the grocery orders to the big houses in Hatherley Road and met many interesting people.
We were there when the snow fell and we had the "big freeze" in 1963. That was where I heard President Kennedy had been shot. All formative memories of that time for me.
I went to school at the convent at the top of Hatherley road. Every Saturday morning was spent at "Saturday morning pictures" - lots of fun! We seemed to have a lot of freedom and Sidcup was a safe place to grow up.

I was Mr and Mrs Jennings son who lived there from 1949 to 1960 before moving to Station Road. I attended Alma road and Bexley Lane schools and also used to deliver grocery orders locally. Like the previous commentator I went to the ABC for Saterday morning films and I bet he can still sing along to the Saterday AB.C club tune "Blaze Away"
I also went to St Joseph's Convent, and have been researching it. I have compiled most of my research under my name Armourae, it comes up in Google if put in the convent's name. I have interviewed a few former pupils too.
I take it the Saturday morning pictures was at the Canon that became the ABC cinema in the 70s
Ah,Sidcup Saturday morning pictures it was mayhem and great fun. I remember the Jennings shop I think you pointed it out to me David when we cycled home one day from Alma Road. Weren't we in 2B 3B and 4CSE or whatever they were called then. I have fond memories of Sidcup but it is changing so much now.
