Shirley expanded hugely from the 1920s to the 1940s. Stanway Road was created in the 1930s along with several other roads in the area, and is absolutely typical of the development which took place at that time. It was originally a fordrough (a rough unmade track) across the fields of Shirley Farm, which used to be opposite the Saracen's Head.
