More about this scene
The hotel, which opened in 1833, was built to serve the growing numbers of visitors to the natural spring in its grounds, whose waters were believed to be 'very efficacious in several diseases'. Under the ownership of the Earl of Lonsdale it became a fashionable resort, and was visited by Princess Mary in the 1920s and 30s. During the Second World War the hotel was requisitioned as a prisoner of war camp for German officers.
