Runcorn, Transporter Bridge c.1955

More about this scene
The car carrying vehicles and foot passengers usually took up to four minutes to cross from one side to the other. It was 55 ft long, 24ft wide and could carry 300 passengers and, to begin with, four two-horse wagons. There were numerous tolls (it cost 5d for an adult corpse to cross the bridge!). On the Widnes side of the bridge the world's first double- decker bus service was started in 1909 especially to meet passengers from the bridge and give them a ride into the centre of the town.
