Councillor Edward Taylor and Alderman George Leach Ashworth, who was twice mayor of Rochdale, were largely responsible for acquiring the 16 acres that form the park. Ashworth`s statue was unveiled on 1 June 1878 - it cost 800 guineas. The inscription states that he was `a devoted friend of the public`. The bandstand, given by Alderman J Duckworth MP, was opened on 4 November 1893.
