More about this scene
Only the tower survives of the original church. The building was rebuilt and restored on a number of occasions, first in 1630 and later in 1870 to a plan by Blomfield. The east window was designed by Burne-Jones and installed in 1891. Church Street was always liable to flooding, and in March 1947 the water flowed into the lower floor of the Feathers (right). The banks of the nearby river were strengthened, so that today it is safe to drink in the Feathers without wearing waders.
