More about this scene
After centuries of starvings, beheadings and executions, the site later became a haven of tranquillity in 19th-century Pontefract. The grounds were let in 1863 for the growing of liquorice, and a few years later the council laid out the grounds for a public amenity. Six hundred trees were planted, the ruins were made safe, and on the 400th anniversary of the town's incorporation the grounds opened to a crowd of 5000 on 28 July 1884.
