More about this scene
Looking down Ropergate towards the Market Place, on the left we see the old Crescent Cinema (1926-1993), one of five picture palaces once in the town. Ropergate also had the County Court Office, right, and nearer town, the old post office. Also on the street is the office of the Pontefract Park Race Company, formed in 1919 to manage the old course established in the early 18th century. A grandstand was built in 1802 to the designs of Bernard Hartley, also the architect of the Pontefract Town Hall. In 1983 Pontefract became the longest flat racecourse in Europe.
