Living In A Pub

A Memory of Peckham.

I was born in kings college hospital and spent the first 6 years of my life living in The Newlands Tavern Peckham. My Gram owned it Mrs Rhodes . Mum lived with her and me cause my Dad was in the navy. I have pictures of the inside ,it seemed enormous,it did meals ,events etc. I remember as a toddler being able to ring the bell for time! It had 2 balconies one either end ,it seemed so high! The Ransleys had the veg shop and the flower stand outside the cemetery. I hope this sounds familiar to someone. My name is Shelagh lenane and my Mum was also Sheila. I was born in 1951 but moved when I was 6yrs 7years old.

Hello Shelagh. I was fascinated to read your account of living in The Newlands Tavern. You may know that the pub is now called The Ivy House and five years ago was bought by the local community to save it. I was one of the people involved at that time. Many people have shared their stories of the pub from over the years, including a local resident who remembers Mrs Rhodes from during the war. Photos however seem hard to come by (even the people who ran it during its 1970s pub rock heyday don't think they have any). We have a few interior shots dating back to the mid sixties, but nothing before then. If you'd be willing to share your photos (and any further tales!) we'd be delighted! I'll personal message you too. All the best, Hugo
