More about this scene
Broomfield House has a complicated history. It expanded around a simple timber-framed late mediaeval building. Through the 16th century, and into the 17th, rooms were added; in c1820 the brick wing clearly visible in the photograph was built. The fake timbering was a slightly ridiculous whim of the Borough Council in 1928. By far the most important asset of the house was the grand staircase of c1720, with its decorative mural by Gerard Lanscroon of 1726. A structural analysis of the house was undertaken by Richard Lea of English Heritage in 1994.
