On the east side of St Giles is St John's College, founded in 1437 for Cistercian monks. To the west, screened by trees, is a famous Oxford pub, The Eagle and Child, which during the Civil War became a payhouse for the Royalist Army. J R R Tolkien and C S Lewis met here every week during the 1940s and 50s.
