More about this scene
An ancient market town, Ormskirk was an important centre for the linen trade during the 16th century, whilst in the late 18th and early 19th centuries there were silk mills in the area. The parish itself included the outlying villages of Bickerstaffe, Burscough, Lathom, Scarisbrick and Skelmersdale; the population of Ormskirk itself grew from 2,554 in 1801 to 3,838 in 1821. Over the same period the parish as a whole increased from 8,251 to 12,008.
