The photograph shows Colt Hill Bridge and the rear of The Bridge House. In 1949 the New Basingstoke Canal Company bought the canal from the Harmsworth family, who had owned it since 1923. Under new ownership there was no commercial traffic, and the canal had become derelict by the time of this photograph.
