Gone For Ever
A Memory of Nunhead.
IN THE 1940s TILL THE 1960s, NUNHEAD WAS FULL OF STREETS OF HOUSES THAT HAD MANAGED TO SURVIVE THE WAR YEARS, EVERYONE KNEW EVERYONE, MOTHERS WOULD CHAT AT THE FRONT GATES OF THEIR HOUSES, THE CHILDREN PLAYED IN THE STREETS WITH NO FEAR OF CARS, MOTHERS ALOWED THEIR KIDS TO GO TO THE PARKS, OPEN SPACES, WITH NO FEAR OF THEM COMING TO ANY HARM, EVERYONE WOULD HELP EACH OTHER, EVERYONE HAD THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE, GREAT FRIENDLY FAMILIES. BUT THEN, THE WHOLE OF NUNHEAD WAS TO CHANGE IN THE 1960s, ALL THE HOUSES WERE KNOCKED DOWN, FAMILIES WERE SENT TO OTHER AREAS, FAMILIES BROKEN UP, THE WHOLE COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS TO LOSE CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER, NEW MODERN HOUSES ERECTED, NEW RESIDENTS MOVED IN, LOST FOREVER WAS THE OLD COMMUNITY SPIRIT, GONE, OLD NUNHEAD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME, SO VERY MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE AND MEMORIES LOST, SUCH A SAD ENDING, AND THEY CALL IT PROGRESS, WHAT DO YOU THINK.
