More about this scene
Nottingham University started in the city in 1881 on South Sherwood Street. In the1920s Jesse Boot, founder of Boots the chemists, gave land to the west of Lenton, and University College moved here out of the city centre. Nottingham University College achieved independent university status in 1948; by then it stood in a park expanded from its original 60 acres to nearer 180 acres. Hugh Stewart Hall off Lenton Hall Drive, named after the Principal of the university from 1929 to 1934, was built in 1937, and incorporates Lenton Hall of 1804 (not seen in this view).
