More about this scene

What appears to be a medieval jettied building may be nothing of the sort. At one time said to be the site of the town house of the High Sheriff of Monmouthshire in the 16th century, the structure was almost certainly rebuilt during the 19th century. Some features of the original building have nevertheless survived in the rebuild, such as some ornate plasterwork. Whatever its pedigree, the building has served as a popular pub for many years and is an unusual and welcome alternative to the grander Victorian buildings on display around it.

Prefabs
My early memories are of the Nash Road Prefabs. Those flat roofed single level houses built after the war. These were later named Cheshire Avenue. We, Mum, Dad and brother John, lived at No 35 overlooking the field owned by farmer Dicky Walters. I have great memories of playing with other kids in the fields and Spytty Park. Head For Heights
I remember walking over the top of the bridge with my father in the summer of 1953; a sunny day with a light wind... whenever in Newport alway remember this walk.

My Grandfather Ben John owned a grocery store called Monmouth Dairy opposite the Handpost - on the right hand side of this picture. I was born in 1944 and have lived most of my life in Africa - but as a very young boy I have vivid memories of my father, Derrek and my grandfather, slipping in there for a quick pint after work - I was left in the entrance hall with a lemonade. Eveswell
My father, John, was a doctor at his surgery/house, Corporation Road and I and my brother John plus mother and father were in the shelter when the mine was dropped. I remember a discussion later about loss of panel patients (Lysaghts and Mannesment) in that street - mother kept the books! I well remember the troops camping on the rugby pitch prior to D-day. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
