I was based here in 1972, as a very young RN Radio Engineer. Antony’s memory sparke a few of my own. Long nights in the transmission hall monitoring an old B&W TV to make sure we weren’t interfering with Coronation Street! I lived in Waddingham Place, off Enfield Avenue, with parents, from 1963, (aged 8), until about 1978. Joined RN in 1973 for 5 years. Me and my best mate Andy, from Humberston, also RN, after one Saturday night on the town in Grimsby, (1976 I think), decided to climb the tallest of the masts at the RN radio station on Station Road. I lived in Station Road from 1932 to 1943 and attended the Primary School until 1935. I walked to school and remember often having to wait for trains at the level crossing. there was a pedestrian gate which was locked after the main road gate. We knew the signalman and he would leave the pedestrian gate open as long as possible as we ran towards it. The ...see more
