The 50s

A Memory of Motherwell.

Hi all, I used to live on Easter Moffet golf course and attended Motherwell central school, my father was the club master in the early 1950s (Jack Potter). I used to go fishing down on the River Clyde between Motherwell and Hamilton near the Hamilton Mausoleum. I also fished in the Strathclyde Loch, I don't think it was called that when I was young. I also belonged to the Motherwell Scouts in Airbles Street near the bing on the left side going down the road. As I got older I fished more up the river near Muirhouse Towers area which was all woods in them days. I will post more memories as I remember them.Slipped up it was Coavillepark ,golf course,

John,
Were you in my class at "The Central" just before it became Brandon High. I was in 4C at the change over. Anyway, if ye can remember anybody else give me a wee shout.
Regards,
Peter.
Hi I was at the Central 1951. I remember a couple of the teachers Bluenose whonused to throw the blackboard cane at you if he thought you weren’t paying attention. Many a time it hit the wall behind my head. Then there was big Joe Wheatley who used to swing the belt over his head before it came down onto your wrist sometime it hit nearer your elbow. The famous footballer Ian St John was my house captain who had a younger brother a year below me.of the two I thought the younger brother was the better player and often wondered where he ended up. I left the school in October 1954 on the Friday and started work on the Monday......those were the days my friends.
Hi John Potter yes many a time I fished down on the river Clyde next to the old bridge als used to go out on the rowing boats in the Clyde Park pond as it was known then. Was back in the area a couple of years ago and couldn’t believe in the changes. The pond has gone and it’s now part of the Strathclyde Country Park that stretches for miles. I also remember when they erected the Coronation Arch next to the bridge on the road between Motherwell and Hamilton it’s gone but the memories linger on.
Hi Douglas , Have not been back to Motherwell since 1955 when I started work some day I would love to come back and see the changes but the time is running out as I have been living in Gordons Bay ,Cape Town since 1975, loved the Motherwell area because of the fishing miles of river plenty of ponds and it was safe also enjoyed playing golf at Coalville Park golf course, was also in the local Scouts the hall was next to a bing can not remember the street .All we have of the area are our memories ,
