Turner's used to deliver the bread in a horse and cart. They had their horses stabled round the back of the shop.My brother had a Saturday job working the cart. Also one of the Sparrowhawk's used to come round with a horse and cart with fruit and veg, I think his name was Fred.Leo's and Sado's, those names bring back memories, I had totally forgotten them.
Goodness gracious I remember Turner's horse and cart! Always had a hay sack round it's neck...a bit grumpy and not easy to stroke (I was horse mad at the time); remember being sent to smell the tar when workmen were tarmacking the roads!! Those lovely 3 coloured lollies with the ice-cream bit in the middle! My sister Anthea set up the first "mobile phone" - two tin cans and a piece of string - with her friend Marion across the road and knocked a poor bloke off his bike! Great stuff! Barbara Hindle (Westmoreland Sq. 1950-62)
The headmaster before Kenyon was Mr, Humphries he was a brilliant man built the school right up to uni standard then came Kenyon a most horrid person had no compassion and lack of excitement completely destroyed morale
I have a memory of firing a cap gun at Turner's bakery horse and cart in Sherwood Park Road (1965 or 1966). It hadn't been my intention to scare him off, but he did start to run away and it was quite funny seeing the baker running after him! He later complained to my parents about the incident (and rightly so) and I of course got told off. As for the lollies you mentioned, are you referring to the ones made by Lyon's Maid called: 'Fab'? My personal favourite was the one called: 'Kinky' (coloured hundreds and thousands on an outer chocolate coating with delicious ice cream on the inside). Yummy!
