Great Childhood Memories

A Memory of Middleton-on-Sea.

I remember living in Middleton on Sea when I was between the ages of eight and 11 in the early 60’s and I went to Edward Bryant school in Bognor. We lived in a road called North Avenue East and I just remember the roads were very gravely apart from the main road that gave the seaside feel to it . Opposite the church was a woody pathway and a seat where ‘the gang’ used to congregate . I used to have riding lessons at the stables round from the stores . My brother used to take me down the beach and further along was a large Seawall that was very high and a ledge that ran along the bottom of the wall and he would dare me to to run along this ledge before the next wave came in crushing against the lower part of the wall it was scary but it was exciting. I had friends that lived further along towards the end of Elmer Road in a small guest house and they hired out yellow and green dinghy’s for the guests but myself and the 2 girls that lived there would go out in the dinghy’s sometimes just for fun . My mum worked over in Southdean camp in the cafe and I sometimes would go over and put some pennies in the slot machines . I know that we all went to Middleton for a holiday when I was very little and I think this is why my parents wanted to move there . I have a photo of me by the pool at about 4 or 5 years old and I do recall there was a tragic accident of a young child that came down the slide in to the pool . Yes I had some great memories of Middleton and one day I will go back and see how it’s changed .
