These impressive ruins were once the home and meeting place for the most powerful men in the land. As Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick looked out over his land, he would have seen acres of the Yorkshire countryside full of villages (little changed today). After Neville was killed in battle, another Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, lived here before becoming King Richard III. In this part of lower Wensleydale it is a curious feeling to walk in the shadow of so much power.

Great Uncle Herbert?
My great grandfather, Christopher, owned Bridge House next to the bridge when this photo was taken, having moved there from Spennithorne where he had been the landlord of the Old Horn Inn. We believe the cart driver was my great Uncle Herbert who had a cart business in the Dale - his sisters the 'Miss Hauxwells' ran a fish business from their home. Bywell
My ancestors The Bywells were from Middleham in the 1700's. I wonder if there are any Bywells still living there

Grocers Shop In Middleham
I used to stay with a friend in the 1950's in Middleham. Her parents had a grocers shop in the square and her father also had a mobile shop which he went round rural areas with. They also had a few hens and cows. Her father's name was Bob Doother. The living quarters were above the shop. I have been back to Middleham recently but cannot find the building. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
