From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). My name is david james crwford (bunny) I was brought up on shakespear cres and went to lewis st school in 1945 then later to winton secondary modern . Any one remember ma lewis at lewis st . Me and brian hurt did we got the slipper a few times for larking about in the playground and being reported by her and sent upstairs to the headmaster. We had a teacher there who used to make his own jigsaws and if you behaved you got to do one . Dont remember doing many myself
Does anybody remember the name of the greengrocers in the centre of Sale Moor,I worked there for a short time .They supplied you with one of those bikes which had a basket on the front which didn't turn and on the first day loaded up my fruit and veg only to fall off it right outside the shop!I think I lasted about a week
In the 1960's we as a family always holidayed in a caravan at Happisburgh. At that time there were lows on the beach which were lovely for the children to paddle and play in. They were warm most of the time and shallow in parts so they were quite safe. After the groins were put in place the lows disappeared and it was such a shame. The beach was never the same. When the ice-cream man came around my mum used to say I could hear him leaving the shop in Acton. Tony Bros sold the best ice-cream ever. They used to sell lovely spearmint lolly's and I became quiet addicted to them. Never seen them on sale anywhere since. There's an opening for somebody reading out there I think.
I lived at 64 Brook Road have wonderful memories of the youth club, Skipper Williams was in charge. I had an apprentership with RJ Whitakers as a carpenter joiner left the UK in 1969 now live in Western Australia
I was born in Sydney road Hornsey in 1946 and went to North Harringey junior school the headmaster was Mr.Patterson and remember all my teachers Mrs.Marsh,Mr.Lancaster,Mr.Howe and the amazing Miss.Nottingham who managed to get the whole class to grammar school and there were 45 to a class in those days! I lived opposite Streetly Riding School, at 23, Manor Road from 1955 until 1969. I spent most of my spare time at the Riding School, I kept my horse at home but used the indoor school, took rides out and have been ever indebted to Colonel Leech for his help and support for all those years. I was born in blandford in 1943 and lived there for the next 14 years,,, I remember my dad coming home from the war,,, my mother and I lived with my dads folks who were caretakers at the grammer school at blandford while my dad was serving his country in india,,, when he came home there was an acute shortage of housing,,, so all the local unhoused familys decided to move into a recently vacated army unit facility ...see more
I remember coming from the other side of Manchester because my Mum and Dad (Betty & Dennis Turner - Dad was lay reader in the church for that time). I was for that time only 8 years old. I moved to 120 Boundary Road, Bidston in 1938, from 11 Clifford Street, off Laird Street. Attended Bidston Avenue School and later Tollemache Road School - Mr Gidney. head master, Pollett. My husband was enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Lakenheath RAFB from 1975 - 1978. One of the requirements for permission to bring his family over to England was proof of a place to live. My husband rented #3 London Lane (now known as The Hannah House) in Mundford. I used to go to The Court School Of Dancing in 1961, 1962 ,1963. This was above Burton's in the market square at the centre of Enfield. It used to be open 7days a week. The evening started with a lesson,and then practise of all the ballroom dances for the rest of the evening. I have just found this site and how strange to see a post from Neville Gerry's son. I used to play with Neville as we were the same age! I lived at Flax Court which was the home of my grandparents, Bernard and Catherine Whitaker. Bernard was the manager of Tilmanstone Colliery from 1930 to when he retired in 1960. I have fond memories of Eyethorne, sitting on the shed roof watching the combines. Playing in the haystacks, etc. I hope Neville's son reads this as quite a surpries to see his name.
I remember me and Shirley ramshaw getting drunk at our house in hedworth lane in our dinner hour from school, also riding brandy Shirley's pony who taught me how to fall of correctly, and getting my first pony Katie and our allotments, sunny days in hayfield, and hanging out up Davidson and Fenwick street, having first snog in bus stop.! My family moved to Ferrers Avenue in the late 50's and I still remember most of the people who lived there. In the days before both sides were cluttered up with parked cars we would play rounders using 4 trees as posts, all the children and a some of their parents would take part. i remember being sent to the gas works for what they called gas shiners. they were 2 shillings a bag no matter what size the bag was . my granny used to sew two bags together so as to get more and i had to push them home in a pram that i could hardly see over the top of all the way to newtongreen . |
i remember my pal at school always wanted a mouse but never had any money . one day he came to me and said the man had gave him one for nothing and would i keep it in my hut . well the first time i went to feed it it came out the box , ran up my arm, jumped on to the ground and was never seen again . it was a wild one that the guy had caught in the shop |
This was one of my Dad's favourite pubs, along with the Leigh Arms in Sale Moor. I used to go to the Warwick for the Saturday matinee and meet my Dad after. We lived in Kershaw Ave, Sale Moor and I went to Norris Rd School. I have very many happy days from Sale Moor and Sale.
All my school years were spent at st barts on tatton st 1949 to easter 1959 I think my most memorable time was when we went to the isle of man for a weak whith harry holmes who was head master at the time

Many years ago, I promised to buy Dad a drink in the "Labour In Vain" public house in Oldswinford, a hostelry that the family has talked about for generations. I had driven past it once before in the 1980s but at that time it was being refurbished and was not open. Our ancestors had left Oldswinford in the 1890s to settle in the South Wales valleys. Going into LMT hospital,every summer during school holidays to have operations on my,right hand which was webbed... Mixed memories of painful,operations - but kind staff and reading every Enid Blyton ever written I think...all provided for the children's use by the hospital... I envied the patients who were allowed to sleep on the balcony...int hose days parents were only allowed to visit on Sundays...so those fists were treasured and much looked forward to
I worked at the DD in 76 just before I went off to the Army . I was a assistant to the Owners Son, who Had recently passed away leaving my school friend in charge of the Biggest Club in Great Britain , I cant remember his real name as its been so Long but his nick name was "Spot" which he Hated ! I was born in the house number 9 Hart Road . I remember attending Manor county First school and walking g there on my own. Who'd do that now as a 5 yr old ? I grew in Riddlesdown from the end of 1959 (when I was 3) until 1976, my parents leaving in 1980. As kids, we had so much freedom, especially as group of 4 or 5, with me, aged 9, as the boss. I remember my new red tricycle being stolen on Riddlesdown (the Downs, as we called it), when going to the ice cream hut for a few mins. The grass had been too long to push the trike any further. I,ve lived in Irby in my early years in a prefab, temp housing after the war. I had a accident and went to Heswall hospital by milk float as we had no car or phone in those days. My memory was the open or charity days I think with a plane in the open grounds and we used to play on it, health and safety would be all over it nowadays. I used to live in Oakland Road off of the High Street. I also used to go to Uplands Road infants and Junior School. Saturdays were spent at Saturday Morning Pictures at the ABC cinema. I also remember Hides department store. After school, we used to stop off at the fish and chip shop and ask for bits left over from the chips, which were free and also the bakers for yesterdays cakes, which were a penny! I ...see more

I have fond memories of Shoalstone Pool. Both my sister and I learnt to swim in this pool. i can remember a swimming gala, about the time of the photo, we had to walk around the pool and up and over the diving board, which i was frightened to do as I didn't like heights !!!! Can also remember in the winter at high tides watching the sea wash over into the pool. So glad to hear recently that this freshwater pool is to be saved.

I was born in Great Bardfield on the 31st August 1939, and I have fond memories of my life in the village. Such as forbidden playtime in the old mill at that time. Does anyone remember an old school building that used to be roughly where the library is now? I remember going in there with my school friend but I don't know what school it was.
Does anyone remember going to this school? It was next to St. Peter's Church in Westfield. I remember two of the teachers names were Miss Coles and Mrs Brimble I believe. There was a building across the road that we went to sometimes - near where the Norwest Bowling green now is. In the summer time we used to go and play on the grass surrounding the church. My mum used to come and collect me as I only lived a few minutes walk away.
I have distant memories of my dad going to this place to measure men for lounge suits , I seem to remember him getting upset because of the poor people (as he said ) having such a difficult life . was it at this hall ?

In 1953 class 1 O Miss Andrew class with Gillian Sweet and Maureen Vass and myself Ann Twidale the only three from Farnborough North infant/junior school to pass the scholarship met Ann & Susan Stubbs twins Jennifer Springate Winifred Polky to mention but a few. Is there anybody like me who can remember the Johnson & Calton (?) bakery that was situated at the Wimbledon end of Worple road, around the 1940's / 1950's. It was next to or very near a restaurant that was owned (I think) by the same company I can still smell the lovely aromas of the freshly baked bread and rolls that wafted out from the bakery.. I remember well receiving the Silver Jubilee coin (still have it!) when my sister and I had just started at Merland Rise Primary School. The headteacher became Mrs. Pepper but I can't recall the name of the lovely lady who was headteacher before her. My family and I moved to Withybrook in 1960 first of all we lived in 2 all saints close later we moved yo 4 Kirby Lane. 2 All saints Close was the place where I met my future wife she lived at No3 next door. I have lovely memories of visiting my mothers family in blaenavon in the 70,s has a small child ,my mothers family seemed huge the were the David family it was a lovely place all so friendly ,my mothers family lived at elgam avenue originally ,I know that my grandmother was killed in a bus crash and my grandfather passed away not long after ,we still have some family left over there and recently I visited the cemetery that m grandmother is buried in,lovely place and lively people
I lived at the base with my parents my father was inspector in the naval police we had a bungalow just inside the main gates. I went to school in bowness a bus picked us up and dropped us off. in the evenings I was allowed to ride my bike and play on the airfields when the sirens had sounded which was around 6 oclock, then all the naval workforce left the airfield and returned to the barracks. my friends were from the ...see more

Sretton was wonderful place to grow up in during the 50's and 60's. My parents, Winn and Mont Dowson arrived in the village in 1948 when Dad got a job at Coventry Tech, and they bought the row of 3 cottages at the bottom of Ann's Lane. Does anyone remember the Picadilly Café in Market Street Kingswinford. We all used to meet there. All the motorbikers from nearby places used to come and play the Juke Box, drink our pepsi and have a fantastic time. My wife spent many happy summers in Deal and Walmer with cousins/aunties/uncles/gran/gran-dad when on holiday from Swindon. She never stops talking about the Glen and mimicking her Welsh gran-dad saying he was going for a walk down Dover Road (you have to do the Dover Road bit in a Welsh accent). never fails to make me smile. I lived in the post office in Quakers Yard. We played in the woods and collected nuts and blackberies and wimberries up the mountains. There was a conker season, a marble season . always something to do or collect. My brother Robert and I delivered groceries for Phil Jones, the manager of the Co-op. I have always felt very proud to have been born at this hospital in 1955. My mother told me that on the day of my birth a WW11 bomb was being excavated and consequently I was moved to Kingston Hospital. Nonetheless I always get a buzz from telling people I was born in Hampton Court.
We moved to Hockham when I was 4 in 1964. My Father Douglas Oliver was the landlord of the Red Lion up until it closed in 1971 leaving just the Eagle to play darts and socialise in. Dad bought the Red Lion and converted it as a family home. Great memories of growing up in the village and being in doctrinated to local village life. I joined the Army in 1975 and it was then that Mum and Dad moved th Watton where dad remains. Anyone out there remember the era to start the memories rolling.
My Grand Parents Mr and Mrs Burbidge lived in Ambleside cottage and worked in the Grange. Its owners then were Mr and Mrs collier and Miss Hewitt. As young school boy 60 years ago I used to go and help Mr Franklin the gardener which gave me my interest in gardening which I later took as my job. My parents also had a boat down at AB called 'Jan' which was moored outside the cottage. The cottage was lived in when my parents bought the boat, but then the husband (Mr Noden I think) died and his wife moved to Weaverham (again I think). Hi I live in hextable ive lived here 25 years with my family and now with my own little family I would love to know any info on hextable as ive researched and cant find anything more so panters ive been told there was once a nursery there thats all I know
We moved to Easthampstead in 1962 and moved away in 1968. Bracknell town did have the Crossways but I do remember the rest of the town which was still beautiful and old. When we returned in 1969 I was horrified as an 11 year old to see just how the old town had been torn down. Just found this - cannot compute! In retrospect, the best days of my life. Reunited after a gap with nee Ann Wagstaff, Anne Legge, Maureen Russell (aunt was Sister Booth) and Gill Baker (now Legge). Old bones ban gatherings, but BT does well from us, so they know of this site now. Such a strict training, all muscles, etc learned. Born and bred in Pumpherston. Went to Pumpherston primary in 1955 to 1960. High school then at West Calder. I remember the days when the milk was place on the radiaters to defrost. I stll hate warm milk to this day. We had our own canteen for lunch in those days. Headmaster was Mr Mckay. Do have some class photos. I will scan in and add to the site. I also remember arriving at Park Hall Camp as a very nervous young man in September 1972. Looking back they would have to be some of the best times of my life. I have been in Australia since 1983 but on my next trip back home to Yorkshire ( yes I still call England home) I will be reliving the trip to Oswestry via Gobowen train station. I can remember visting the Goodies with my dad (Frank Best) I must have been about 7 or 8 in the early 60s maybe ? whas it Bobbie Goodie, always had a big smile on him anyway. it was just a dirt road that led up to thier place, maybe something to do with Motor bikes or cars. have a picture of an old Ford here , i think it was a new at the time. it was my uncles car. his name was Jim Cox. I was born at 4 Emes Road, but remember growing up at 64 Manor Road and spending a lot of my time chasing the old tramp who used to frequent Nappers (wouldn't do that nowadays!). i have many happy thoughts of walsall the old gaumont where i won a free ticket and meal witghthe manager for a cayoning and we watched the alamo wonder what happened to the others who won i think there was three off us,the savoy cinema,the old college where i studied to be a mechanic working for reginald tildesley in wolverhampton st.great memories.

I participated in Rose Queen Day in June from 1945 until June 1954. As a pupil at the little village school my first experience was learning the dances which, after much practising in the playground, became wonderful maypole dances. I was out on a walk between Wylam and Newburn and as I passed the Tidal Stone (which I mention in my stories) I met this man walking his dog, we chatted and I asked him if he knew about the stone, he said he always thought of it as a boundary mark.
