I first moved to St. Paul's cray estate when I was 7 we moved from lewisham as a family to a house near st Mary's cray station then later moved to a house in lullingstone crescent near the shops on top of the hill it was a happy time my mum dad sister and I spent in the area I went to midfield secondary boys school for 5 years until 1967 I just before I joined the army in August of 67 I met a very pretty girl ...see more
In the picture of Crumlin the Square it shows my two very good pals and myself . It brings back a lot of memories to me .

Hi I live in Auckland New Zealand, but my grandparents came here from Tyldesley in 1922 with their three young children. Both my grandfather Fred Needham, born in 1889, and my grandmother Charlotte Dutton, born in 1898, were born in Tyldesley. I was born in Abercregan in Prossers Terrace (41) along with my parents George Chewings, Edna and my two older brothers Michael and Thomas, also a younger sister Janice. My grand parents lived at no. 44 Tom and Cassie. And my Aunty Ethel (Jones) lived at No1 (early 60s known as Ethel the shop). I was born in 1938 in Toooting and we lived at 23 Blakenham Road. My mother sold the house in 1976 after my father died. My first school was the St Anselm's convent in Tooting Bec Road until the age of 7, where we were taught to read and write by nuns. Although not really Handsworth my Mother and her family lived at 212 New John Street West. They lived there until my Mothers Mum died in 1931. Her name was Christina Parker. My Mum was only 8 years old but remembers that day as if it were yesterday.
We lived in Gerrard Street, Lozells, until I was about 6. My father had an allotment where we would go and play, I still have a photo taken when I was about 4 of my father, older brother, and myself at the allotment with my brother on a wooden 'horse' and me on a rocking 'duck'. Photo brings back so many happy times. the field in the foreground was used every year for the Nicholsfield bonfire and firework night. I was evacuated from North London to Stogursey in about 1942. Although I have no personal recollection of this time, being just 1 year old or thereabouts, my mother told me that in the first location, which she referred to as 'crackers castle', we were made to feel very unwelcome, they clearly resented having to take refugees in but in the second we were made very welcome and spent many happy hours there. I lived with my grandmother, Mrs. Talbot, during the war, at The Lodge, part of Miss Pauline's estate. I remember my clothes being passed on to Mrs. Langham for her children. My grandmother and aunt both worked for Miss Pauline. I remember Mr. Lyons, the chauffeur, his wife and daughter who I understand died a few years ago. Whilst researching my ancestry I learned that his mother, my Grandmother Beatrice Emily Sharp died in 1969 in Runwell Mental Hospital (as it was called then). I never knew her but know of this place as although it closed in 1999 I lived in Wickford, just down the road. She may have been an inpatient from 1959 - 69 as her husband died in 1959 and she may not have been able to care for herself ...see more
I loved the castle when i was young. I remember in the winter we used to get a tin tray from the cafe and slide down the folly hill in the snow,boy it was bumpy.We played tic off ground and used to slide down the rough on fertiliser bags,if only our parents saw what we used to get up to they would have been grey long before they were.
Does anyone remember a little girl evacuated from waddon Croydon in Surrey in WW2 her name is Eileen Pretlove she stayed in Eaton Bray in the war years there were 2other girls she remembers, Joan Pratt and June Copperwaite. Eileen is my mother in Law and is now 84 years young she has been telling us of her life in the war. If anyone can fill us in on more memories in Eaton Bray it would be fantastic for her.
i am trying to help my uncle find his friends from sutton road gorton , and trust road, my uncle ken cope, albert cope, mavis cope, brought up and lived for many years on sutton road, gorton, they were great friends of the dennon family who lived at trust road . there was stanley , ann, (anne) , mavis, (who was named after my auntie mavis cope) linda, john, tommy . hope someone can help us we are trying everything as my uncle is ill. thank you sue
I was born inAvenue Road and attended Northside School. My grandfather was on the Council and was awarded the Freedom of Finchley. I will never forget when he was invited to my school on prize giving day and I had a prize to collect from him. I went to Sandon House School during the early to mid 60s. I remember Mr Wilkinson, I got the cane on a couple of occasions! I remember the playing fields where we played cricket and football and the sheds where the tractors were kept - used to have fags up there! In 1945 my half brother was born in Barrington Road at a home for unwed mums called Morningside, are there any archive photos or even recent ones of this home. I have recently found this brother and am trying to make an album of his life.

I have very fond memories of Pilgrim Wood from 1980. The children would make rope swings in the woods, pets were smuggled in on occasion. Not such a nice walk all the way up Sandy Lane, and children had to share bedrooms, but I remember mostly the fun and good humour. One of the staff had been resident as a child and recalled a time when clothes were communal, and when each child, even the 4 year old, had tasks to do, but by 1980 things were somewhat different thankfully.
Oh,what happy memories I have,i worked on the Baby unit at xmas,helping to make up the bottles for the babies,and then washing and sterilizing them in the autoclave.I also worked on Agnes Hunt and Robert Jones ward,as well as Florence Gibson ward.On Robert Jones ward there was a lad called Billy Syms,he was in a wheelchair,and he teased all the nurses.i enjoyed working there
I remember the footbridge, in the late 50s my friends and I, all girls from the Holy Family school in Rose Hill would go down under the bridge and have secret times and meetings. We were the "goofy gang". We didn't get up to much but it was very exciting meeting under the bridge because we weren't allowed to be there, it was off a busy road.
At the end of Penge Lane opposite the Crooked Billet pub was an island on which there was a shelter, public toilets and a horse drinking trough. The 227 buses used to turn round here before the route was extended to the Crystal Palace. We used to empty the used bus ticket boxes to add to our collection of free play things. I can remember the whine of the engines as the drivers changed down a crash gear box to get the bus up Swan Hill into Bromley.
I was born in Purton, maiden name Giles. We lived at no.13 Blacklands, Pavenhill. My father was Arthur William Giles and he was Master Butcher at 9 High Street. Directly opposite to the Angel Hotel. 1955 What an Eventful day that was ,with my Pocket money earned from the Farm , and Hedges of Hagbourne , I went for my Customary Hair Cut at Aubrey Gay's only to find it Chocker Block , So I Ventured into Mr . Bill Street's ,and He gave me more that a Trim , It Looked like a conscription haircut ,I Then Consoled myself with a trip to Woolies . I was evacuated to Newbridge to the home of Trevor and Rachel Evans. They were a childless couple. Trevor worked at the mine in the office. He wore a Homburg hat and a bow tie to work. I lived in Barnt Green from 1940 to 1961.i attended Woodruffe School, and have many happy memories of miss Matthews and Miss Woodruffe,
I used to have shorthand lessons with Miss Robinson ( I think I have the name right it was a long time ago) she lived with her sister in a chocolate box cottage which backed onto the church yard. Both the sisters seemed elderly to me then I am now 63. I did enjoy my mornings with her she made the most delicious hot chocolate mid morning with a shortcake biscuit then we carried on until lunch time when I would be picked ...see more
I trainee from 1959 to1962, and loved every moment great days happy memories.my so surname was Pickett,and I married Michael Jones,who was a junior doctor,but sadly he died in 1978 . Would love to hear from any one who was at the hospital when I trained?
There was a school near Coombe Woods for children that had hearing and speech problems does anyone remember the name ? My friend Mary Casilden mother used to work there. We attended Shirley Secondary School and lived on The Shrublands Estate Shirley off of Bridle Road. I worked Saturdays in a Hairdressers in the parade of shops off Bridle Road think it was called Jan Terase, the pub next door was The Goat . My maiden name was Cox
me and my brother,mum and nan always went to Jaywick for our holidays, and stayed in a bungalow near gorse green, my brother and I used to go to the top of our road and ride the double bikes with the canopies for about 6 old pence, then go to the arcade ,buy some lovely hot chips, and go to the clubhouse at night , walk along the beach with our mum and nan ,it was the most happiest times ever and ...see more

We moved from Eastbourne to Wannock Lane, Willingdon in 1963 as my mother felt it would be a nice place for us to grow up at the foot of the Downs. It certainly was, Willingdon School fulfilled us academically & athletically. I still have contact with old school friends from Willingdon who are scattered all over the world. In 1960 my grand parents moved from Easington Colliery to a new house at 51 Edenhill Road.My parents lived close by in Harvey Close.I used to go messages for my grand mother to Edenhill shops,where there was Robsons the newsagents,Duncans the "corner shop,the fish and chip shop,the Chemists,the Co-op,the fruiterers,the betting shop and a general store.These were the shops catering for the surrounding ...see more
MY grandad and grandma used to run The George. They were Reg and Edith Astley. I was brought up there with my mum and dad, Pat and Sheila. Mum was a barmaid there with my Aunty Eunice. My family lived at 23 Selcourt Close, Woodley, around 1958-59, before we emigrated to Australia (now in Canada). I went to a convent school there, but can't remember much more than that, except some nice woods nearby.
I was at Delamere from 1972-1975 my name then was Susan Caplan Mr Steven Lewis was our head master his wife was called sue if i remember they had 2 children . I remember going there and was put in a dorm but was given a room on the end because i was one of the older girls then after a while move to the new block where it was much more private . I lived at Dunscroft, Polton Road until 1968, aged 8. I remember Lasswade Mill and the siren in the morning. After returning from the States and Canada in 1965, the mill had closed. Have just stumbled on this site and the entries about Worksop and Carlton have stirred a few memories. I lived in Worksop from 1956 to 1979. Shops: MacFisheries, an old fashioned W H Smith. Machin's hardware, the brilliant C V Berry and son record shop, Gordon Bassett barbers. And was it the Cipriani cafe? There was a chip shop, I think on Eastgate, called Cox's which did unusual fish cakes to their special ...see more
I lived there until 1939 and was then with the 4th Royal Sussex . In the photo left centre you can see the old post office /store run in those days by my aunt and uncle (Sumerfields) our house was next door. Down the road was Ray Jupp , his Dad was a painter I believe, on the other side was Peter Baxter. Those were very happy days
To the right of this picture, on the High Street was the town hall. For seven years I waited there every morning for the Jump Circular bus, or if I missed it the Rotherham bus to take me into Barnsley where I was at the then grammar school. Hi I remember going to Sally Gozer. My granddad used to man the train signals down there from about 1960. I used to go to Mill Lane school in the early 50s and still live in cliff Crescent Warmsworth my parents moved here in 1953 I was 5.

The building with the turret is Acton Lodge where my grandparents Drs John and Mary Leedham-Green lived from 1946 until the late 1980s. The two cottages to the right had been demolished when my mother first visited (in the 1960s - she says it was a garden) and my grandparents built an extension there that housed their GP practice and garage with bedrooms down a long corridor accessible from the main house above. ...see more

I lived on Victoria Road near Hope Hospital . I went to Brommhouse Lane primary School and went to st James church where i was the rose queen . Iwent to Hope High School opposite Bule Hill Park My step father lived on park road untill his recent death last year xx
Barnes was the place no matter what year I grew up there from 1951 born in Cleveland rd, I remember the pond freezing over and walking to the Island slipping and sliding on the ice...floating my boat.. with my dad..feeding the ducks on a sunny warm day...most of the lovely trees have gone, the Island has changed its not wild looking anymore,school days at Lonsdale, and Stillingfleet school, I will return there once I have enough money to buy a house its my place full of happiness for me.
I well remember the Arcade Record Shop and went with my friends every lunchtime when I was at Pitmans College in Ballards Lane. We also used to go to look at the new arrivals in a shop called 'Tracy's which was near Priors (later called Owen Owen). Priors was old fashioned even for 1959. Does anyone have any memories of my Primary School in Ditton, Widnes. I can't remember the schools name unfortunately, but it was located on Hale Road/Liverpool Road. I remember the head teacher was a Mrs Kenwright.
I lived in Ely from 1986 to 1991, over the Market Place in a flat. I worked in Forehill in an office over the gents outfitters. I also came to Ely on business as early as 1982 when Tangerine Computers were at the old brewery. Gwernol,1 Penybryn Terrace.I remember it well. used to play rugby/football round the back of Penybryn with Roger Thomas and Gerald Davies,well tried to anyway!! Sutton in Ashfield History I am writing a book that follows the First World War experiences of my Great Grandfather, Albert Edward Wingrove. He used to have a Off Licence premises at 58 Outram Street in Sutton in Ashfield, pictured below with the name above the door. Ebenezer Owen Davies was a carpenter in 1914 who took in my father, Thomas William Banks aged 14 from the New Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol - I am endeavouring to find out more about what happened to my father from this point on in his life. I was a " Resident" here in 1955 and would like to hear from anyone else who was there at that time. My strongest memories are of grueling hard work, from daybreak to dusk, bleeding hands and sadness. I scrubbed the whole place!! If anybody knows of more information about this awful place, I would be grateful to learn more, such as who ran it, other than Bedfordshire County. I cannot recall how long I was there but I think it was at least a year. Is it still there and what is it now ???
I lived in Bredbury from 1958 to 1979 and went to Barrack hill school. then went on to High field we used walk pass the slater house on bents lane. Mum and dad always went in to the club next door as my dad was one of the singers there.
This is more asking for other peoples memories than having one of my own. My Great Great Grandparent owned a pub call 'The Queens' I believe, it was owned by at least two generations of the Murray family (from maybe 1911 -1940?). However we don't know the names or indeed the exact location, only that it was close to Collyhurst. If anyone has any memories of either the Pub or Landlord or even both, it would be brilliant if you could leave a comment. Thanks very much in advance.
I attended Palmers Green High School in the late fifties and early sixties. There were no school playing fields so we had to go to Ford's Grove in Winchmore Hill for sport. One day I and a group of friends went to find Cliff Richard's house to try and get his autograph. I am currently researching my family history, and my grandparents lived at Kirkham Caravan Park around 1952/53. They lived in a small caravan and had their first child, (my mum) at Lytham St Annes Hospital.
