More about this scene
We are looking at the choir screen and the organ above it from the main body of the church. The choir where the Bishop and church dignitaries sat was beyond the screen, cut off from the congregation. The high screen, with organ pipes topped with pointed angel wings, has been in place for more than 400 years. The organ was one of the very best in the country and technically superb, ranking tenth in Great Britain. It was completely destroyed in the blitz and could not be saved. Note the pulpit on the left.
