More about this scene
This is the top of Market Street, adjacent to Piccadilly. Lewis's building is on the left, and Rylands Store is opposite on the right: two of the most successful princes of commerce, and two great influences on the way we shop today, are facing each other at the top of Manchester's most commercial retail thoroughfare. The Rylands building was rebuilt at the turn of the century, and the building went on to be Paulden's Store and today Debenhams. Marks & Spencer's first large shop was in this building. 'Good & Cheap' is one of the slogans outside Rylands.
