Golden Memories

A Memory of Loventor Manor.

My memory of Loventor Manor dates back to August 1970 when it was a hotel. My husband Colin and I chose it as our honeymoon destination all those years ago. At the time it was quite expensive for a week's holiday - all of 19 guineas (roughly £20) which was a week's wages in those days. We arrived late on the Saturday night and were shown to our our luxury 4 poster bedroom by a young girl, who for some reason couldn't stop giggling - perhaps she knew we were honeymooners! I was mortified when we unpacked our cases and handfuls of confetti cascaded everywhere.

We had a lovely week, the sun shone everyday as far as I can remember. We visited all the local places of interest particularly Totnes, Berry Pomeroy Castle and of course the lovely beaches. We also spent time walking in the manor grounds, often accompanied by the resident Jack Russell, aptly named Jack!

We have returned to the area over the years and know that Loventor Manor is now private dwellings. Lucky people who live there!

What a shame it isn't still a hotel though. It would have been our number one choice for our Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations next year.

What a wonderful memory you have shared of Loventor Manor. The Manor is as you mention now residential dwellings and has likely altered somewhat to your visit in 1970. However as a current resident of an apartment at the manor, i can share your enthusiasm for the beautiful area. You would be welcome to visit for your Golden Wedding Anniversary for Tea and scones and a little reminisce : )
Wow, this has sparked a memory for my husband Iain and I. We too had our honeymoon there in 1985, August 3rd. We too could only afford a couple of nights stay. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon to see a huge white marquee in the garden as we drove down the narrow lane. When we parked on the gravelly drive some dogs came out to greet us - a beautiful golden retriever, being one. We were shown to our room by a lovely Lady who explained that they had entertained a Jockeys Ball the night before. The following morning we had breakfast and were surprised to see Robbie Coltrane and Keith Allen also sat having a quiet breakfast! We spent our time in the beautiful gardens and visiting the local areas. I remember dinner was a set menu of Trout with almonds! My husband and I had never eaten it before as young newly weds ! Its coincidental but we have just returned from the area and popped along to see the old Manor. I will find some photos and see if I can upload.
Lovely memories.
