London, Southwark, St Mary Overie Dock c.1875

More about this scene
The dock takes its name from nearby Southwark Cathedral, which was a priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The word 'Overie' is a reference to the church being 'over' the water from the City of London. The buildings have gone, but the inlet survives, and is now home to the seaworthy 'Golden Head' replica.
