London, Eros And Piccadilly Circus c.1895

More about this scene
The glittering fountain depicting Eros was a memorial to the philanthropic nobleman Lord Shaftesbury. He died in 1886 and this photograph shows the fountain soon after it was erected. It was designed by Sir Alfred Gilbert, and when challenged about its impropriety at the time, supporters pointed out that it was 'purely symbolical and illustrative of Christian charity'.
