Nostalgic memories of Llwyngwril's local history

Share your own memories of Llwyngwril and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I am trying to research my Grandfather's family history with a struggle but i do know on his marriage certificate he worked at Nant Farm. His name was JAMES OSCOUGH JONES, unable to find his birth record so possible adopted. He married my Grandmother Mary Lewis who at the time was working at Shop Newydd. If anyone recognises his name or can enlighten me with more help or information it would such a help. Jeanette
My great aunt Jane Beecroft taught at Q.M.S girls school for 39 years and often took the girls camping at Llwyngwril. I am trying to find someone who remembers her so I can add information to our family history. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
The memory of that quaint old village reminds me when we lived there in the 1950s, in the small white cottage called (Welsh sounding) Te Revil, or Te Effiel. I was two years old, a twin with my sister Carol, the local children took us out in our twin pram. We came back many times to camp down at Owen's farm, Grif was the shepherd and it was nice to see the sheep being dipped. The tin roofed post office also sold toys ...see more
Our family used to have our holidays (from Birmingham) in Llwyngwril and my dad tuned pianos in the village during our stay. We used to stay over a village shop and the lady owner would present my brother and I with a tin which contained broken biscuits which we would sit in bed munching. I remember making a nuisance of myself in the corner garage and happy days on the beach, as well as train spotting. Happy early teen days!
I have now discovered the existence of 229 separate postcards for this delightful village and of these I have collected 171. They range in date from 1890 to 2008 and Friths were the most prolific of publishers, issuing approximately 110. I reckon there are another 50 out there to be discovered. The rarest cards I have are of an Edwardian funeral at Llangelynin church with the ancient 2-horse funeral bier in use.
Just wondering if anyone remembers any relatives of their families still around there.
Having moved back to Shrewsbury, my family and I spent many holidays in the village in the 1950's and we spent many day trips on Sundays in the village, parking by the Friends burial ground and having a picnic lunch and enjoying the sea air and the lovely beach. I would have my Ian Allan railway spotters book and would write down all the locomotive numbers. This exercise gave me a lifelong love of the ...see more
I was born in Shrewsbury in 1940 and my mother and I moved in with my grandmother at tawelfan in 1941. This was opposite the lane that leads down to the beach via the Friends burial ground and alongside another lane that lead up to Llwyn ddu farm and a footpath that took you up and over the mountain.
My parents were married in Llwyngwryl church shortly after the First World War. Is the church still there and can anyone tell me where I can find the Parish Records which would have contained details of their marriage?
I say 1950 for the year my memory relates to but in fact my memories cover from around 1946 to 196 I've only just found this web site for "Memories" although have looked at the site before and what nostalgia it has evoked in me. My memories are all childhood ones; it's been too long since I visited this dearest of villages, although from what people who have visited since I was there say the place has ...see more
