More about this scene

This column was built by public subscription in 1817 to honour a local landowner, Henry William Paget of Plas Newydd. He was Wellington's second-in-command at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, and lost his leg during the battle. The bronze statue was added in 1860, and a spiral staircase inside the column gives access to a viewing platform. The column became a local landmark.
