Hello, I hope there are still folks alive to remember 1966 beating the bounds in Kerswell village. My mum and dad , Don and Cynthia Plummer, ran the old Halfway pub opposite the old greyhound track. And later, about mid 60s, they took on the Hare and Hounds pub till about 1974. I was 13 when I beat the bounds in '66. Anybody remember that time?? As a child, during school holidays I would stay with my Grand-parents in Newton Abbot and often travel to Torquay on the smart dark red number 12 Devon General bus. On the journey I would look out for the tunnel at Kingskerswell near Jurys Corner where sometimes our bus would have to wait if another one was coming the other way as both could not pass under the tunnel. Has anyone heard of a school/ home in Fore Down in around 1840? The headmaster was John Wale, who was born around 1799(?) I have a relative who was there, but does not have any parents and the census names quite a few people at that address, and not all children.
On reading peoples of Daccombe I'm surprised no one has mentioned the famous Treacle Mine, probably a secret closely guarded by the villagers themselves. Maybe I've now let the cat out of the bag! Anyway in 1921/22 my Nan and family lived for a while in a cottage in the village owned by a Farmer Rowe.
