More about this scene
Overlooking Ilkley is the Swastika Stone, so called because of its attractive engraved markings; in reality, they barely resemble the emotive 20th-century swastika symbol. Believed to be associated with cup and ring culture, the design, on millstone grit, is a shallow indentation between a half and one inch deep and eighteen to twenty inches wide but sixteen to nineteen feet high. Although speculation tends to believe the design is a fertility symbol, its meaning remains an enigma.
