More about this scene

Records show that St Lawrence stands on the site of a Christian church dating back to at least 1108. In 1325, Sir Robert de Hungerford repaired and refitted the south aisle as a chantry chapel, and another chantry was added in 1451. Many of the sepulchral monuments of the ancient church have been preserved and placed in the modern building, including the mutilated effigy and inscribed stone commemorating Sir Robert. The present church, designed by a Mr Pinch of Bath, replaced one demolished in 1814 and it was completed in 1816 in Bath stone. Disliked by Bishop Wilberforce, the church design has been improved upon.
