More about this scene
John Smeaton and Thomas Telford were among the 18th-century engineers who designed this essential section of the Lea Navigation Canal and River Lea, which allowed hundred-ton ships to reach Hertford and transport cargoes of malt to London. The lock allowed the maintenance of the necessary water levels downstream to Dicker's Mill.
